Founded in 1921 as Mughalpura Technical College in Mughalpura, a suburb of Lahore, it later changed its name to 'MacLagan Engineering College' in 1923, after Sir Edward Douglas MacLagan, the then Governor of the Punjab, laid the foundation stone for the main building, now known as the Main Block. It was affiliated with the Punjab University in 1932 to award Bachelor's degrees in Electrical and Mechanical Engineering. In 1939, the name was changed to Punjab College of Engineering and Technology, and the college began offering a Civil Engineering degree. Part of the college, known as East Punjab College of Engineering, was relocated to India during partition. A bachelor's degree programme in mining engineering was established in 1954. The West Pakistan University of Engineering and Technology, Lahore, received its charter in 1962. Bachelor's degree programmes in chemical engineering, petroleum and gas engineering, metallurgical engineering, architecture, and city and regional planning were established in the 1960s. The University of Engineering and Technology, Lahore was officially renamed in 1972. It had established more than a dozen master's degree programmes in engineering, architecture, city and regional planning, and related disciplines by the 1970s. University of Engineering and Technology, Taxila was founded in 1975 in Sahiwal, was relocated to Taxila in 1978, and became an independent university in 1993.

UET Lahore Admission 2022 – The University of Engineering and Technology Lahore is now accepting applications for the 2022 academic year. Bachelor's, Master's, MPhil, Ph.D., and other certificate programmes accept online applications. Online registration is now open, and the advertisement specifies the deadline for submitting the application form. The applicant must have passed Intermediate (Pre-Engineering) or its equivalent with at least 60% marks and a 60% weighted aggregate based on 70% weighting for Intermediate and 30% weighting for Entry Test marks to be eligible to apply to any of the bachelor's programmes offered.
