At least eight individuals were reported dead following Israeli airstrikes on an Iranian consulate annex in Syria’s capital, Damascus, on Monday, April 1st.
Iranian state media disclosed that among the casualties was Brigadier General Mohammad Reza Zahedi, a senior commander with the Quds Force of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.
Syria’s official news agency, SANA, confirmed that the Israeli attack targeted the Iranian consulate building located in the Mazzeh neighborhood of Damascus.
Eyewitnesses and AFP correspondents at the scene verified that the annex building adjacent to the embassy had been completely leveled in the upscale neighborhood. Photographs captured by the AFP depicted a substantial pile of rubble, approximately two stories high, beside a fenced compound.
Reports from Iranian media outlets indicated that the airstrikes resulted in the total destruction of the annex building while affirming that the Iranian ambassador remained unharmed during the attack.
The strikes have intensified tensions in the region, highlighting the ongoing conflict dynamics between Israel and Iran, with Syria being a significant battleground. The incident underscores the volatile situation in the Middle East and the ramifications of geopolitical rivalries on the ground.
